In A Nutshell:

The importance of patient-centred care in delivering safe and clinically effective care, and how this is related to patient and staff experience.

Good patient experience is a key ambition for the NHS, and is closely related to other quality dimensions of clinical effectiveness and safety.

In June 2020, we published the What Really Matters to Patients and their Carers Report; that stated how person-centred care is really important to patients, but is difficult for staff to deliver.

In January 2022, we published the Beyond Demoralised Report; which outlines the experience of staff in trying to deliver this care and how this was made more challenging by the pandemic.
