This new course from the Improvement Academy draws on essentials from coaching and leadership theory. It is highly interactive and delivered by 2 qualified coaches, Sarah Cooper and Claire Marsh, who share a series of resources designed to help workload prioritisation, boundary-setting, and an understanding of how leadership styles impact on, and influence others. Key concepts from neuroscience and physiology are also provided, to understand and identify burnout risk, and the positive steps that can be taken to reduce this. Participants are provided with a book of resources that they can refer back to, and share with others.

Sarah Cooper worked as a doctor in the NHS for 19 years, and Claire Marsh as an academic in organisational and culture change. They are both passionate about helping people stay mentally and physically well at work, by having space to think clearly, and make the best decisions, on a daily basis, for them and their colleagues.
Feedback from participants
‘The time to breathe! And to reflect on my own leadership style’.
‘Shared experiences, recognise similarities and challenges we face daily’.
‘Lots of time for discussion and provision of lots of tools to use in practice. I was worried the day might just be focussing on problems but it’s been great to get these off our chest but more importantly to have ways of coping and dealing with these’.
‘Fantastic audience participation’.
Clinical Leadership Fellow Ellie Flatt
Attending the Leading Well, Staying Well course as a Clinical Leadership Fellow was a real privilege. Over the past year I’ve spent a lot of time exploring how workplace culture, leadership and psychological safety influence both patient safety and staff wellbeing, particularly through supporting implementation of Martha’s Rule. This course reinforced how they’re fundamental to every part of health and social care. It highlighted that looking after ourselves as leaders and colleagues isn’t separate from delivering high-quality care, it’s an essential part of creating workplaces where people feel supported and are able to provide the best care possible.
One thing that really stood out to me was the openness in the room. Hearing people’s experiences and reflections highlighted just how much a course like this is needed. I came away thinking this course should probably be mandatory for everyone working in the NHS. The conversations, practical tools and opportunities for reflection felt genuinely valuable. One tool I’ll definitely be taking away is the Circles of Influence, as a simple reminder to focus my energy on the things I can influence ( https://learningloop.io/glossary/circles-of-influence ), rather than the things I can’t, particularly when working in complex healthcare systems.
