Aimed at leaders, managers, clinicians, analysts and patients, this workshop will help you understand what you can and cannot learn from hospital mortality statistics. You will learn how they are derived and (ab)used. You will also learn how to best to report mortality statistics and understand how to investigate a high/low hospital mortality statistic.

His report probing variations in Dr Foster Standardised Hospital Mortality Rations in hospitals in the West Midlands has generated widespread interest and represents an important milestone in our understanding of the relationship between quality of care and case-mix adjusted mortality.
